It seems your child is showing signs of school anxiety and possibly low self-esteem. This often happens in children whose difficulties with reading are significant enough that they affect their entire school experience. It’s a sign that it is important to recognise that there is a challenge, and start working on correcting it.
What does it mean?
Understanding your child's assessment for each of the 8 categories:
Many children face some difficulty memorising the alphabet, recognising the written form of letters, as well as associating letter forms with their sounds.
When children struggle with “phonological awareness”, it means it is difficult for them to break down a word into smaller sound components. This is a foundational skill necessary for fluid reading.
Reading requires fast and fluid decoding of letters and grouping of sounds. Most children who struggle with this build coping mechanisms to hide this, leaning on memory and creative completion.
While the speed of acquisition differs between children, correct writing requires a solid knowledge of orthographic and grammatical rules and the confidence to apply them.
Struggling with isolated general language skills is not necessarily an early sign of dyslexia. However, the frustrations children experience during their difficulties often cause lack of enthusiasm for reading and writing and that can cause general proficiency issues in the long term.
Sometimes children start to “dislike” reading as a way to hide their struggles. Over time some may associate reading in general with struggle, failure or disappointment, which hinders their long term academic development.
Children are aware of their difficulties and can become anxious when they recognise their inability to get good results at school or when they understand the worry they cause their parents.
School Performance: Strong signs that reading difficulties are affecting overall school performance.
School problems are obviously a very important sign that a child needs quick support and remediation action. Difficulties in school are rarely caused by lack of “effort” of a child. In many cases, it’s most helpful to accept that some children may not respond well to the traditional way of learning how to read and write.
